HISTORY
Before being taken in by the Hyakuya orphanage, Mikaela lived with his abusive parents until the age of five. His father was an alcoholic who abused him regularly and his mother was never of sound mind after joining a "certain" religion. The last night he saw them before beginning his life in the orphanage, his mother pushed him from his family's car as his father sped down the highway. The incident ended in an innumerable amount of cars in a pileup.
In the orphanage, he named the other children living there his family. When he met Yu, he welcomed him in to their family, too. He lived in the orphanage until he was eight, unaware of the human experimentation going on around him.
After the virus wiped out all the adults in Tokyo, all children- including Mikaela and the others from the orphanage- were taken to Sanguinem, where they were treated as livestock whose sole purpose was to give blood. In order to help his family, he began offering his blood to Ferid and asked for food and money in exchange.
Eventually, after four years of living in Sanguinem, he was able to steal both a map and a gun from Ferid's mansion, allowing his family to finally make their great escape. Their plan had gone fine until they finally reached the exit, where they were met by Ferid. As they tried to escape, his family was slaughtered, leaving only Yu and himself as the survivors, just barely in his own case. He encouraged Yu to leave him and go, which he did after shooting Ferid. On the verge of death, he was met by Krul, who turned him into a vampire despite his unwillingness.
Ever since that event, he relied on Krul's blood to keep him as partially human; just on the verge of fully turning into a vampire, but not quite. He grew to resent both humans and vampires, an immense distrust for both being the cause.
Time passed without any word of his remaining family member. Mikaela had just about given up hope when he heard Yuichiro might have been alive. It seemed too good to be true, and yet, on that day in Shinjuku, when they were reunited for the first time in four years, he was able to confirm Yu was alive. Yu had survived his escape, and after witnessing what had happened to him under the "care" of the humans, Mikaela made a decision.
He was going to save Yu.
